Transgender Legal Defense Project held a meeting with trans*activists from a number of regions of Russia on the 2nd of December 2017 in Saint Petersburg.
The meeting’s goal was to consolidate our efforts in activism, discuss cooperation in the light of current events (such as Ministry of Health developing a new medical certificate for legal gender recognition) and receive feedback about our work from regional activists.
During the meeting we provided an overview of our Project’s activities, such as legal consultations and court proceedings, advocacy and monitoring research, and also discussed in detail a number of pressing issues, such as: regional practices on legal gender recognition in civil registries and courts, advocacy possibilities (especially regarding Ministry of Health), information and awareness raising efforts and potential new directions about our work.
Among the many suggestions proposed by regional trans*activists regarding the latter was advocacy for transition-related healthcare: cost reduction of hormone treatment, reproductive rights, inclusion transition-related care in mandatory health insurance, donor issues and general awareness raising among medical specialists.
The meeting was attended by 26 activists (most of which, barring few, were transgender or non-binary people) from different regions of Russia, such as: Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Perm, Samara, Ekaterinburg, Krasnodar, Rostov-on-Don, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Moscow and a number of Saint Petersburg’s initiatives.
The participants highly appreciated the management and content of the event. We received mostly very positive feedback. Most of the participants also noted that they would like to take part in more such events in the future, as they are very important for experience sharing, consolidation of efforts and general cooperation.
The main suggestion that we received was that the event was too short and that it should be prolonged to two days in the future in order to have more time for discussion. Our team will definitely take this suggestion into consideration for our future events and activities.
